“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” (Galatians 4:4–5)

Jesus came “in the fulness of time” — when the time was exactly right, when conditions were ripe, when the time set by the Father arrived. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. This was an event planned by our Father even before the world was formed. God laid the foundation for this event stone by stone, carefully planning and preparing through the previous generations so that everything would be in exactly the right time and place for the Son of God to come and bring redemption to us.

Part of the preparation was in the form of prophecies. The prophecies of the coming of the Messiah would help the people recognize Jesus when He came. Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, Isaiah, prophesied that He would be born of a virgin and that His name would be Immanuel. Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary and He was given the name of Immanuel, which means “God with us.” He was called buy the more familiar name — Jesus.

Micah, the Prophet, foretold that the Messiah would be born in the town of Bethlehem. This, of course, came true several hundred years later. Bethlehem means “house of bread.” What an appropriate place for the birth of Jesus, the Bread of Life.

Hosea had prophesied that God would call His Son out of Egypt. Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Egypt for a time until it was safe to return to their hometown of Nazareth. Fulfilled prophecy was again pointing to the fact that Jesus is the Messiah.

Many other prophecies are written about the coming of the Messiah: His sacrificial death, His resurrection and even details about His betrayal and the manner of His death. God the Father carefully planned this event — and for what purpose? God did all of this so that we could see who Jesus os, trust Him as our Savior and learn to please Him with our lives.

It is good for us to know that Jesus’ coming was planned far in advance. Prophets foretold the details and in the fullness of time, Jesus fulfilled every prophecy.
